Meet the teacher

Hello and welcome!

My name is Charlene and I am very excited to be able to bring babysign to Hereford. I love baby signing because it can give your child a voice when they are unable to speak or are finding it difficult to make themselves understood. Signing can enable your child to communicate their wants and needs. As babysign is based on British Sign Language (BSL) you will be learning a lifelong transferable skill together which you will be able to share with family and friends.

A bit about me:

BA (Hons) English; Level 5 Management and Leadership Extended Diploma (CMI); NFCE CACHE Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Children and Young People’s Mental Health; Level 1 – 3 Makaton; currently working towards Level 2 in BSL.

I most admire

Ted for overcoming obstacles through sheer perseverance is a hugely admirable quality in such a young person. He’s my hero!

Favourite Signs

Gold and turtle (my favourite animal too!).

Secret Passion

Being a Pokémon Master with Ted.

About me

I am engaged to Adam and we have two very energetic and extremely loveable boys, Ted (6) and Isaac (1). They both use British Sign Language (BSL) and spoken language to communicate as we fully understand the importance of being heard when you are unable to speak. When Ted was 18 months old, we realised that he was unable to communicate as effectively as other children his own age. When he reached 2 years old, he was diagnosed with a phonological disorder which meant he was unable to pronounce some sounds at the beginning, middle or end of words causing many tears and tantrums. Fast forward a few years and Ted is an avid reader, has beautiful handwriting which his teachers often comment on and is a non-stop chatterbox!

I have an avid interest in the Early Years following Ted’s speech diagnosis and have completed a course in Early Years Child Development. I have worked with children in various capacities. One of my first jobs was organising and running children’s parties and I absolutely loved the craziness and chaos. I worked in administration for many years for a youth organisation which included trips away for a week at a time. Since having Ted, I have assisted with the Scouts and Ted’s school.

Signing is a wonderful parent/child bonding experience and I absolutely loved that we were learning together. It was a magical moment when Isaac began signing ‘flower’ at 5 months old closely followed by ‘milk’ and ‘food’. Isaac can currently use 30 signs at 18 months old, but he can understand many more. As a family we do communicate using sign language and it is particularly lovely watching Ted and Isaac sign to one another especially when they are telling each other stories.

I would love for you to come along to one of my classes virtually or live (when we are able to). You and your child can have fun learning some core baby signs based on British Sign Language (BSL). This could provide you with an incredible insight into your baby's thoughts and alleviate your baby's frustration as they can express themselves and be understood. Amazing!

I am passionate about encouraging the use of sign language as it is inclusive and simply beautiful. There are so many other benefits which I cannot wait to share with you. If you would like any further information, or you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. I would love to hear from you! My classes will be held in various venues. Please contact me for your nearest one!

I look forward to hearing from you.
